That's not entirely true. I love Christmas. I just hate all the morons out spending money they don't have buying gifts for people they don't like and being hateful to me as a result. I hate pundits moaning about "Happy Holidays" replacing "Merry Christmas." I don't like Happy Holidays any better than they do, but if the centuries have taught us anything it should be that being hateful doesn't win anybody to Christ. I hate people who steal other people's Christmas gifts. And I hate people on the Salvation Army's Angel Tree who ask for gifts way more expensive than I can afford for my kids and the people who buy them.
Peace,
MO

Fun Run? Bah Humbug!

The princess's school had their annual "Fun Run" yesterday. Don't let the name fool you; it's just a euphanism for beg your friends and family for $$$ for the school. It's really annoying. In the first place, I hate the whole educational notion of throw money at it and it will get better. I also hate the whole contest aspect of it. We don't have a big family; we're not well off. Of course my kid's not going to win the TV. Then there's the whole day of actual educational time the kids lose so they can run around a track. And don't get me started on the way the thing was run. We couldn't even count my daughter's laps for the first 10 minutes because her class didn't have the proper cards.
Anyway, you get the point. The fun run ain't fun!

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://whatmohates.blogspot.com/2005/10/fun-run-bah-humbug.html' title='Fun Run? I watch it, occasionally--It's the only way to communicate with the hubby from September til January--but I just don't get it. It kinda makes sense when people root for their alma mater, but I hate my alma mater's team; they've wasted so much cash trying to be division one when they suck. And I really don't understand when people root for schools they have no tie to. Eventually, I'll just wind up joining hubby and root for the Yankees. It ain't like the Braves or the 'stros are actually going to win the World Series anyway. I'll try to do better.
I'm going controversial for my return.
Mo Hates the American Red Cross.
Don't get me wrong, I feel sorry for the people who were caught in Katrina.--Although I would never die in a hurricane; I might die in a car wreck trying to get away, but I would NOT die in a hurricane. And don't give me that crap about them being too poor. It's a week til payday and I have $10. Poor does not equal stupid. That's beside the point though.
If you're giving money to the Red Cross thinking it's going to Katrina's victims, don't be surprised to discover that it's been "saved" for future disasters--it's in the fine print--it happened after 9/11--it'll happen after the next big disaster.
From a purely business standpoint, it makes sense. Most retail stores rely on the Christmas season to carry them through the rest of the year. The Red Cross relies on the high profile disasters to make enough to help with all the little ones that come along. The only problem is the Red Cross isn't a typical business and their methods are, at best, borderline deceitful. Ain't that America, even the charities suck.

Uncovered

So if you've read this blog before, you know I hate Jessica Simpson for what she does to a cover song. I hate Sheryl Crow for the same reason. My husband hates her for a whole slew of other reasons, mostly revolving around her dating Lance Armstrong, but I can overlook that. What I can't overlook is what she did to Sweet Child o' Mine and that Bryan Adams song (Was it Cuts Like a Knife? It was so bad I've tried to erase it from my memory.) I just can't understand it--the lady can write a pretty good song herself , why destroy songs written by other people? Anyway, I can overlook her anti-war crap; I can overlook having to look at her haggard face during all the Tour de France coverage; I can overlook the wretched Oprah with her and Lance; I can even overlook the fact that she spells Cheryl with an "S". What I can't forgive is her new status as another bad cover band. So Mo hates Sheryl Crow.

It's not funny!

I usually try to be witty or at least light when I make these posts, but I'm not feeling particularly light-hearted today. I just watched the funeral procession of a 30 year old National Guardsman from my home town who was killed in Iraq. Rumor had it that people (and I use the term loosely) were planning to use his funeral to protest the war. Not some ordinary whack job protest either, but a" God kills American soldiers because we don't hate homosexuals enough" protest. Luckily I don't think they showed. Instead I saw people lining the road holding flags, practically every sign of every store with a message of support and the longest funeral procession I have ever witnessed. I don't think I have to tell you what Mo hates today.

First Grade

Our oldest, the princess, started first grade this week. She's fine with it, but I am filled with misery and apprehension. Wally, the hubby, waxes nostalgic on everything on his blog, and first grade is no exception. I, on the other hand hated first grade. I had no friends, my teacher disliked me because I had already read all the first grade books in Kindergarten and she had to come up with new lesson plans for me. She allowed her best friend's kid to go to the county wide spelling bee instead of me, even though neither of us missed a word in the in-class contest. She once paddled the entire class because someone walking down the hall knocked on another teacher's door and she blamed us. You get the point. How can I be positive for my kid when everything after Kindergarten was downhill for me?
The worst thing of all is Mo hates hating first grade.

Cover Me, NOT!

We've all heard them--the superfluous cover song. I don't know why singers, and I use the term loosely here, feel compelled to take a perfectly good song recorded by someone else and screw it up royally. O.K. So you like it, but maybe someone else does, too and one man's homage is another man's crap. Today I saw a video for Great White "singing" The Who's "Substitute" but hey, those guys have to live the rest of their lives knowing they were once in Great White, so I guess they got the punishment they deserve.
The worst offender in recent times has got to be Jessica Simpson--first it was Berlin's "Take My Breath Away," then Robbie Williams' "Angels." Now she's destroying Nancy Sinatra's "These Boots Were Made for Walking." And what is wrong with Willie Nelson? You'd think he'd be too busy vomiting to appear in the video. Isn't it enough for her to destroy the English language, desecrate the memory of Daisy Duke and shake her Ta-Ta's at wounded servicemen?
Believe it or not, I actually want to like the girl. I mean she can't really be as dumb as she acts, can she? Then there's their "punishments" for the various crimes of the players. You push a photographer and get a 20 game suspension. You shove an ump and get 5. You play well and it must be 'roids. And he's so good at it he's probably going to win. Just one reason I hate reality TV, the jerks always win.
And then there's their version of Gilligan who pees in his hut. GROSS!!! ( I'm 32.) But if you're CBS that seems to be a good enough reason to cancel the thing. I'm not so much upset by the cancellation; I've gotten used to every show I like getting cancelled after 1 or 2 seasons. But I am cheesed off by the fact that, in an effort to save it from the chopping block, the writers totally abandoned the characters They had spent two seasons building in the last 4 or 5 episodes and, of course, it ended with a cliffhanger. I guess I'll just be hanging off this stupid cliff forever.
What really hacks me off is the fact that CBS makes no bones about the fact that they don't want old people watching their network. You can read Les Moonves lame quotes for yourself. http://news.yahoo.com/s/latimests/itsoutwiththeoldascbscancels4shows
I particularly liked the idea that talking to ghosts skews younger than talking to God. I'm talking about those otherwise intelligent folks who for some reason believe that kids are incapable of telling the difference between fact and fiction, reality and fantasy. These are the kind of people who would prefer that Cookie Monster eat carrots. It's old news, but you can learn more about that atrocity here http://nationalreview.com/goldberg/goldberg200504220746.asp
The latest example I've seen came as I watched They Might Be Giants talking about their new Here Come the ABC's CD. They told the story of a woman who wrote them complaining that they sing the alphabet out of order in one song. She was afraid it would confuse her son and other small children and wanted to know if they were going to re-record the song "correctly" or just leave it off future pressings of the album. Thankfully, they said "no" to both options. Crikey, It's just a song!--My kids' favorite at that.
So I say Hooray for They Might Be Giants! and declare Mo hates when stupid people breed.

Just a Quickie

Mo hates typing one handed because the 3 months old screams every time I sit him in the swing.

The Old Alma Mater

Don't get me wrong, there are many things I liked about my alma mater, Middle Tennessee State University or MTSU. I had some great professors. I think I actually learned a few things, but the place is administered by a bunch of loons! Maybe all of academia is run by fruitcakes--what am I saying, maybe? Of course, you'd have to be crazy or stupid to want to work for a college.
I first discovered the idiocy of those in charge when I was an undergrad and they decided that the name of the place should be changed to The University of Middle Tennessee. It was supposed to make the place more appealing to students. 'Cause you know no one wants to attend Ohio State or Mississippi State or FSU. They argued with the folks in the government who oversee such things for years and were turned down. Eventually the cost of changing all the stationery must have hit them because the idea has finally dropped along with the "su" on all the logos. Then there's our ill-fated turn to division 1 football--at least it lets us lose to a higher caliber of opponet (although we did beat Vanderbilt). Or there's the people they hired to update their alumni records. They'll call me; I'll give them all my info--including the fact that my husband is a grad of the same place and all his info. Five minutes later they'll call asking for him--he gives them all his info. Then they call back the next week and repeat the entire process. And I won't even get into all the reasons why I hate the school's president.

My latest reason for hating the place came in the official alumni mag last week. First of all, they send us two copies. You'd think as many times as we've told them we're married they'd save a tree and let me and hubby share. Anyway, this issue had an article touting the school's Recording Industry Department--It is a good program. I'm not denying that-- and congratulating Michael Gray for his Grammy win. That's all good, except all their quotes from Gray are about how much he learned from Dr. Charles Wolfe, an ENGLISH professor, a fact they never bother to mention. It probably teed me off more than usual because I was an English major. (I even spent a semester as Dr. Wolfe's graduate assistant.) But you'd think they could at least mention that the man's not a RIM prof. I guess grads from the recording industry program give more than us lowly liberal arts people.
So it is declared, for stupidity above and beyond the call of duty: Mo hates MTSU!

Coming Soon: Mo hates when stupid people breed.

So it begins

O.K. So I don't actually hate everything. I like my husband and kids (most of the time), my parents, the dog, but not the cat, and Kevin Harvick, although NASCAR is getting on my last nerve lately. But here's a chance to rant about those things I do hate.
1st up: Oasis
Once upon a time this was my favorite band. My kid is named Liam for goodness' sake, but they have gone from young, rockin and cool to a bunch of old farts. Not only is their music lame, they are even lamer. My husband reviews music on Blogcritics and he got a promo of the latest farce of a release from the band. It's a watermarked CDR emblazoned with multiple warnings concerning the horrors that will befall him should the CD fall into the wrong hands. You'd think it was the "football" containing the codes for nuclear detonation. I'm afraid to listen to it--will they know if more than one set of ears is in the room when it's on? I'm afraid to have it in the house with my kids--what if they play it for one of their friends? Will it emit poison gas? Will the NARAS goons swoop down and sue us? The possibilities are endless. The terror is real.
So for going lame in all possible ways, it is hereby declared: Mo hates Oasis
